In this blog post, I will detail how I learn and what methods help me retain the most information. This topic is extremely relevant in today’s society because of the educational revolution that is completely changing the way we teach. I will be taking a test to find out what kind of learner I am, and I will demonstrate which teching styles would most likely lead me to success. This post will not be in my usual, silly style which includes lots of emojis and pop culture references. However, my posts in the future will still be in the original format.
The three main learner types are Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic/Tactile. Auditory learners tend to retain what they hear, Visual learners retain what they see, and Tactile learners retain what they touch, feel, or do.
After having taken an online test, it was determined that I am a Tactile/Auditory learner, meaning that when I complete an action myself or I hear it, I will understand the meaning better and retain more of the information. These results don’t surprise me at all, as presentations tend to be the way I retain the most information. Furthermore, when a physical activity is involved in the learning process, the information will resonate with me more because I completed the action.
The traits traditionally associated with tactile learners are: Restlessness, activity, short attention span, and disorganization
The traits associated with auditory learners are: Like to talk, Low concentration, disorganization, and inability to focus with loud background noise.
The traits associated with visual learners are: organisation, calmness, and high focus
As a kinesthetic learner, I have an easier time retaining knowledge when I have a part in the learning rather than when I just see the information. As an auditory learner, hearing the information and engaging orally helps me keep as much of it as possible.
Seeing as these two both are very present in group learning, one would presume that I learn best in groups however this is not the case. In my opinion, group learning tends to give a disadvantage to one person who ends up doing everybody else’s work, furthermore being in groups can distract people from the task at hand, leading to decreased productivity.
In conclusion, the best conditions for me to learn are individual and kinesthetic, with an element of auditory. This learning style is the most likely way for me to succeed in school and to a greater degree in life. The way we learn can shape our life and our school experience, so therefore it is important to cater to the needs of each individual student.
